Success tips for sewing doll clothes

Sewing 18″ doll fashion is a sewing category with immediate satisfaction, you can sew a finished outfit with little effort, time, and fabric!

If you are sewing “in the small” (doll scale) here are a few quick tips to insure you success:

Tips about fabric choices:

Woven cotton is the easiest fabric to sew doll fashions.

If sewing knits, be sure to use a ball point needle: it’s a must!

You can use iron-on featherweight knit interfacing to back thin, slippery or finicky fabrics.  It provides just enough stability. (Handy stuff, I rely on this often!)

Stitching tips and aids:

Since seams for 18″ dolls are usually 1/4″, it’s handy to use a 1/4″ presser foot. (Specialty feet really do make sewing easier!) This is the one I use, but not for zig zag stitches!

When starting to machine stitch a seam, it’s good to hold the thread end. For some reason when stitching 1/4″ seams (especially knits), the beginning stitches and fabric sometimes get caught in the feed dog and won’t allow the fabric to move on. (Problem avoided!)

Have a long needle nearby, it’s a handy (sometimes necessary!) tool to help guide fabric along while machine stitching. I probably use my long needle 50% of my sewing time.

I am continually looking for patterns to make 18″ doll clothes. I find it fun to find the fabric and the trims to make the clothes. Then to sew the outfits and see the final product is wonderful. My goal is that I would like to sell my creative intrepretations of 18″ doll clothes and also to learn how to make patterns for my own designs.
I have probably made one or more outfits off each of your patterns. I also combine items from different patterns, like a skirt from 1902 and the T-shirt & vest from 2296. I enjoy making clothes for dolls and am always looking forwand to the new patterns for new outfits to make.

  2. I would like to order the patterns for the Doll Clothes Please send me the necessary info. Thanks, S. Morrow

That’s a great tip to use an iron-on featherweight knit interfacing to back thin fabrics. My mom is very enthusiastic about creating clothing for dolls as well as finding pre-made clothing. Currently, she would like to get some American Girl doll clothing for her dolls.
