Spring into accessories, sew a Bohemian tote.

With signs of spring, it’s time to look over our wardrobes. Consider bohemian style totes to add some flavor to your outfit combinations. Bohemian style is the ultimate in expressing yourself. Ethnic and folkloric prints, rustic textures, dangly fringes, sparkly trims and beads, all can be considered when creating a bohemian tote. An Ikat print was the pivotal inspiration for the tote below.

This tote from Simplicity 1598 was designed with the chevron trend in mind. It has a center seam and the pieces are cut on the bias.

Create a chevron design with a stripe fabric as shown above. Instructions for cutting are included in the pattern, but if you want to use the technique on another accessory, follow the diagram below.

Cut out one piece at a time.

1) Cut first piece on bias as shown, using pattern.

2) Cut out second piece using the first cut piece as a guide to perfectly match stripes.

3) For reflecting stripes, flip pieces 1 and 2 and use those as guides to match stripes.

4) Stitch reflecting pieces together at center seam.

Once you start thinking bohemian totes, you will have a reason  to peruse the trim and jewelry isles at the hobby store. Beware! Ideas for lots of totes can result…. but one can never have too many totes!
