Make handy pouches

This little pouch is designed to coordinate and fit perfectly in your open tote. It measures 7 1/2″ by 4 1/2″ .

As an option a completed pouch can be stitched securely to the tote lining.

Follow these easy instructions and you will have  your own little pouch in a flash!


You will need the following ingredients:

Basic equipment, tools and notions.

One piece of computer paper to make your pattern

14″ lightweight zipper

Fabric remnant 12″ by 9″

To make a pattern guide, fold computer paper in half crosswise. Cut along fold.


Using pattern guide, pin and cut out two pieces of fabric as shown.


Pin zipper to long edge of one pouch piece, as shown. (Note that zipper end and zipper pull extend well past the side of the fabric.) Stitch, using a zipper foot.


Press pouch fabric away from zipper opening as shown, stitch pouch fabric close to edge.


Repeat steps to attach the other side of the zipper to the other pouch piece.


Slide zipper pull within pouch pieces and secure zipper end with a whipstitch as shown. Slide zipper pull so there is a 2″ opening.


With right sides together fold pouch pieces as shown. Note that the top pouch piece is folded along the upper edge of the zipper. Also note extra fabric extends at the bottom, trim this excess fabric away.


Stitch pouch sides and bottom. Trim seams to 1/4″.


Zig zag seams if a finish is desired.


Turn and press. Edge stitch the upper edge.
